先日行われたセガの「新作体験会」イベントにて展示されていた「ネヴァーウィンター・ナイツ 日本語版拡張キット シャドウ・オブ・アンドレンタイド」の，日本語版Screenshotsを入手した。早速作品の概要と共に紹介しよう。

　本作は，テーブルトークRPG「ダンジョンズ ＆ ドラゴンズ 第3版」のルールをベースに，「フォーゴットン・レルム」の世界を表現した「ネヴァーウィンター・ナイツ」の公式拡張セット。30種類以上の特技や50を超える呪文，16種類のモンスターなど多くの要素が追加されるほか，伝説の古代都市「アンドレンタイド」と奪われた四つのアーティファクトをめぐる，新たなシナリオを楽しむことができる。またオリジナルシナリオ（モジュール）を自由に制作できるシナリオ作成ツール「オーロラ・ツールセット」には，新たに雪原や砂漠，遺跡などといった地形が追加されるという。

　ちなみにローカライズ作業自体はかなり進んでいるという話だが，セガのスタッフ曰く，展示されていたのは「まだちょっとローカライズ（日本語化）が甘いバージョン」だとのこと。筆者がプレイした感じでは，とくに"甘さ"を感じるところは見当たらなかったが，これ以上にクオリティが高まるというのであれば，ローカライズ版の完成度にはかなり期待してよさそうだ。
　しかしながら，膨大なテキスト量を誇る本作や，そして過去に「バルダーズ・ゲート」シリーズのローカライズを手がけてきたセガの努力には，まったく恐れ入るというのが筆者の本音。せっかくこういった良作が日本語化されているのだから，素晴らしき洋ファンタジーの世界を，ぜひもっと多くの人に堪能してほしいものだ（「指輪物語」の映画化などで注目されているとはいえ，まだまだマイナーな感はある）。
　ネヴァーウィンター・ナイツは，日本国内でもMODのコミュニティがなかなかの盛り上がりを見せているなど，RPGファンにはお勧めの一本。この拡張版に注目している人も多いだろう。こちらも今冬の発売を予定しているようなので，期待している人は今しばらくの辛抱だ。（TAITAI）
