【Mac】「Q3A」と「Zoo Tycoon 2」のUniversal Binary化パッチ

　FPS「Quake III Arena」と，動物園経営シミュレーションゲーム「Zoo Tycoon 2」のMacintosh版が，それぞれ「Universal Binary」化を果たした。

　Q3AのUniversal Binary版を開発したのは，Sqonk Onlineというデベロッパで，id Softwareがリリースしたソースコードをもとにして，Universal Binary化の作業を行ったとのことだ。
　同社のサイトの「Quake 3」ページで，プログラムをダウンロード可能。ただし，このプログラムを動作させるには，製品版のQuake III Arenaが必要だ。
　また，このバージョンには不具合が残っていることが分かっており，PowerPCを搭載したMacで動作させると，対戦サーバーの選択画面でクラッシュするので，注意しよう。

　もう一方のZoo Tycoon 2については，Universal Binary版であるバージョン1.1へのパッチが，発売元MacSoftサイトのサポートページを通じてリリースされた。ただしこのパッチをあてるには，あらかじめバージョン1.0.1にアップデートしておく必要がある（同じページでパッチをダウンロード可能）。

　Universal Binaryとは，Mac用アプリケーションの形式の一つで，Intel製CPUを搭載したMac上でネイティブに動作するもの。PowerPCを搭載した従来のMacよりも，高速に動作することが期待できる。
　Intel製CPUへの移行が始まったMacにとって，いかに多くのゲームがUniversal Binary化されるかということが，今後を占ううえでとても重要な意味を持つ。新作，旧作を問わず，Universal Binary化のニュースが次々に伝わってくることを期待したい。（山）
