　アタリジャパンが世界的ビッグタイトル3本を発売！

　アタリジャパンでは，2月，3月と立て続けに世界のビッグネーム3本を国内で発売する。まずは2004年2月26日（もう目前だ！）に「マジック：ザ・ギャザリングバトルグラウンド」日本語版が発売。続く3月12日には，「ターミネーター3」日本語版が，3月18日には「Unreal Tournament 2004」日本語マニュアル付き英語版が発売される。

　「マジック：ザ・ギャザリングバトルグラウンド」日本語版は，世界的なトレーディングカードゲームのムーブメントを巻き起こした「マジック：ザ・ギャザリング」（M：tG）をコンピュータゲーム化したもの。
　これまでも何度かコンピュータゲーム化されてきたM：tGではあるが，今回の作品はコンピュータ用であることを全面的に生かした内容となっている。というのも，肝心の"デュエル"がアクションゲームの要素を孕んだリアルタイムバトルとなり，プレイヤーはマスターキャラを直接操作して，向かってくる敵クリーチャーを攻撃。うまく攻撃がヒットすればクリーチャーを撃退し，しくじればダメージを食らう。敵マスターの攻撃魔法も，操作次第で回避できるようになっているのだ。
　これまでの「なんで敵の攻撃を全部そのまま受けるんだよ！」という疑問を解決する，大胆なゲームシステムを採用しているのである。M：tGの，あのカードならではの戦略性が好きな人には逆にやや疑問かもしれないが……。もちろんネットを介したオンライン対戦も可能だ。

■黒の呪文：カーノファージ，闇への追放，ジャザム・ジン，無慈悲，センギアの吸血鬼
■青の呪文：大気の精霊，対抗呪文，魔道士の悪知恵，呪文乗っ取り，送還
■緑の呪文：巨大化，ゴリラの酋長，ラノワールのエルフ，踏み荒らし，荒々しき自然
■赤の呪文：熱情，ゴブリンの空襲部隊，インフェルノ，マグマの巨人，火山のドラゴン
■白の呪文：天罰の天使，神々しい存在，狙い撃ち，ありがたい老修道士，神の怒り

　「ターミネーター3」は，2003年に劇場公開された同名の映画をゲーム化したもの。人類vs.スカイネットというチームバトルの図式で，マルチプレイに特化したゲーム内容となっている。
　人類側はいうまでもなく，さまざまな銃火器で武装した人間（と，人間に味方するターミネーター）。一方のスカイネット側はターミネーターはもちろん，Tシリーズの原型であるT-1や飛行ユニットなど，映画にも登場したマシンに扮して戦うことも可能となっている。シングルプレイはBOTを相手に，マルチプレイと同様のゲームモードを楽しめる（それしか楽しめないという言い方もできるが）。

　「Unreal Tournament 2004」は，先日とうとう待望のデモがリリースされ，このデモがまた大変高い評価を受けているというFPSのシリーズ最新作。これまたマルチプレイに特化したゲームで，むしろ"マルチプレイFPS"の中では代表作ともいえる1本。グラフィックスの"技術的な意味での業界水準"となっているタイトルでもあり，そういった意味でゲーマーもメーカーも登場を毎年楽しみにしているシリーズだ。
　これ一つで，FPSというスタイルを利用したさまざまなゲームモードとマップを楽しめる。MODへの対応も柔軟な，汎用性の高い作品となっている。
