	〜開発者達が選んだゲーム・オブ・ザ・イヤーは，誰の手に？ 　アメリカ時間の23日夜，IGDAのメンバー達によって選出されるデベロッパズチョイス・アワードの式典が催された。これは，2003年に大きなインパクトを与えたゲームソフトを，開発者達自身が選び出そうというもの。それゆえに，彼らにとっては数あるゲーム賞の中でも最も価値ある賞であるとされている。 　今年のチョイス・アワードでは，Xbox用ソフトとして最も速いスピードで50万本のヒットを記録し，PC版でも大人気となったBioWare社の「Star Wars：Knights of the Old Republic」がゲーム・オブ・ザ・イヤー大賞ほか二つの賞を獲得した。 　Star Wars：Knights of the Old Republicは，「Dungeons ＆ Dragons」シリーズのPC化でRPGソフト開発のノウハウを培ったBioWare社にとって，大きなマイルストーンとなった作品だ。日本ではローカライズされることはなさそうだが，アメリカでは続編の話も出始めている。 　このほか，やはりクロスプラットフォームでリリースされた「Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time」も，業界での評判通りの結果を残している。傾向としては，MMOやマルチプレイヤーモードに重点を置いたソフトがなりを潜め，手堅いストーリー構成やキャラクターデザインを前面に押し出した作品に人気が集まったようだ。 　またデベロッパズチョイス・アワードでは，これまで未踏だった分野で功績を残した業界人を称える「ファーストペンギン・アワード」が恒例で選ばれる。このファーストペンギンとは，天敵がいるかもしれない海中に向かって，最初に飛び込む勇気あるペンギンを，対象者に称えたものだ。 　本年は，「パラッパラッパー」で"音楽ゲーム"のジャンルを切り開いた七音社の松浦雅也氏が，日本人として初めて選ばれた。 　そして本式典で最も栄誉ある功労賞（ライフタイムアチーブメント）には，BioWare社のレイ・ミュージカ（Ray Muzyka）博士とグレッグ・ゼスチャック（Greg Zeschuk）博士の二人が揃って選ばれている。これは，IGDAへの功績と失敗のない作品作りが認められたもので，両氏にはゲーム・オブ・ザ・イヤー大賞と同じくらいの喜びとなったはずだ。 　昨年からは，独立系の開発者達に最高で1万5000ドルの賞金を贈るインディペンデント・ゲーム・フェスティバルの大賞も選ばれるが，今年は独立系企業として大型オンライン専用ゲーム「Savage：The Battle for Newerth」を作り上げたS2 Games社が獲得している。 　デベロッパズチョイス・アワードの受賞者とノミネート作品は，以下の通りだった。（奥谷海人） Game of the Year 「Star Wars：Knights of the Old Republic」（BioWare社） 「Beyond Good ＆ Evil」（Ubisoft Pictures社） 「Call of Duty」（Infinity Ward社） 「Prince of Persia - The Sands of Time」（Ubisoft Montreal社） 「ゼルダの伝説 風のタクト」（任天堂 EAD社） Original Game Character of the Year 「Star Wars：Knights of the Old Republic」のHK-47 「Metal Arms：Glitch the System」のグリッジ 「Beyond Good ＆ Evil」のジェイド 「ビューティフル ジョー」のジョー 「Voodoo Vince」のヴィンス Rookie Studio of the Year 「Call of Duty」のInfinity Ward社 「Rise of Nations」のBig Huge Games社 「A Tale In The Desert」のeGenesis社 「Savage：The Battle for Newerth」のS2 Games社 「Metal Arms：Glitch the System」のSwingin' Ape Studios社 Excellence in Audio 「Call of Duty」におけるChuck Russom氏の音響効果 「キャッスルヴァニア」における五十嵐孝司氏と山根ミチル氏の作曲 「Crimson Skies: High Road to Revenge」におけるDavid Henry氏とStan LePard氏の作曲 「The Lord of the Rings：The Return of the King」におけるLaurent Betbeder氏，Paul Gorman氏，Howard Shore氏，Charles Stockley氏，そしてDon Veca氏の作曲 「URU：Ages Beyond MYST」におけるChristopher L.
